When it comes to government building’s continuity, Maryland has one claim to fame – it has the oldest state house in the nation that is still in legislative use. The Maryland State House was constructed in 1772 and has been the seat of Maryland government ever since. This Georgian-style building houses the Office of the Governor and the Maryland General Assembly.

The state house has the only distinction of being the only state house that once served as the nation’s capitol. It also has the largest wooden dome built without nails. The building is where George Washington resigned as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, paving the way for civilian rule in the early days of the nation’s democracy. The state house was also the site where the Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the American Revolutionary War.
