Monocacy National Battlefield is a wonderful day trip made by history and nature combined. Located in Frederick, Maryland, the site boasts 51 historic structures, along with a wide variety of archeological sites and historic landscape features. The battle that occurred on July 9, 1864 on what is now Monocacy National Battlefield, became known to history as "The Battle That Saved Washington. The battle was fought as part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864, during the Civil War.

Since 1934, the site has been undergoing continuous development. In 1964, the Maryland Monument was constructed in part of the one hundred year anniversary of the Battle at Monocacy during the Civil War. In 1973, the Battlefield was designated a National Historic Landmark, and by 1975 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. At the time, the site was called the Monocacy National Military Park, but a year later there was a decision to change the name to its current National Monocacy Battlefield.

The Monocacy Battlefield offers different exhibits, collections, research opportunities and a wealth of fascinating facts and activities. At the new visitor center which opened in 2007, you will see a variety of interactive and multimedia exhibits along with artifacts, maps and interpretive displays of the Battle of Monocacy. Visitors may also elect to take one of the sites available Auto Tours or Walking Trails. Guides are available for Auto Tours of the Battlefield and will enlighten visitors with interesting facts, stories, accounts and stops along the way.

There is always something going on at Monocacy National Battlefield. Special events and programs occur regularly throughout the year and are offered to guests by park rangers in coordination with Living History volunteers. These programs are designed to educate visitors on the extensive history of the surrounding area ranging from the Civil War era and even earlier. The National Battlefield Visitor Center is open daily, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Whether you’re looking to explore the site’s Civil War history, pre-colonial history, or natural setting, a visit to Monocacy National Battlefield is meant for you.
