The Washington Monument State Park was built in 1827 in honor to George Washington, the ?Father of the United States?. It is the very first monument for the first president to be completed, making it the oldest of its kind there is today. It was built using stones by Boonsboro locals.
The first restoration for the Washington monument happened in 1882, as vandalism and the harsh outdoor weather reduced it into rubble, despite being relatively new. During this re-working, they?ve also added a canopy and a roadway for vehicles so more people can access the site.
The transformation to a public park only happened in 1920 when the Washington County Historical Society acquired it. It became a state park and was rebuilt again in 1934.
