The Burial Hill is a 16th century historic burial site where according to historical accounts, several of the first English settlers, the ?Pilgrims?, were buried in this particular burial site. In this particular cemetery, one will discover grave stones made of carved wood.

The Burial Hill overlooks the Plymouth Harbor and considered the main location for the fort. The oldest stone was built in 1681. A few of the grave markers are long gone and the only surviving grave stone is from Edward Gray who died in 1681. According to historians, Burial Hill is considered sacred hence it is properly maintained and preserved. It was also speculated that the grave stones would have a good chance of survival up to this day if they were left untouched.

The hill was not mean to be used for burial purposes; however, it became a burial site after it was abandoned. The ?Mayflower? settlers who died during the first winter were buried on Cole?s Hill. Today, not a single grave can be seen but a tablet is marked that signifies their resting place.

What also make Burial Hill famous are the number of prominent people buried here. According to burial records, a total of eight famous people are found to rest in the cemetery. One of them is Howland John, an American history legend and founder of the Plymouth Rock, buried at the hill in 1620. Adoniram Judson, a missionary of the American Baptist Missionary Union to the Burman Empire, was buried in 1850. Also a prominent figure resting in Burial Hill, Englishman Colonial Governor William Bradford was one of the few ?Pilgrims? who came to Plymouth and sought refuge. According to his gravestone, he died in April 9, 1657.

In order to get to Burial Hill, one must pass through the Town Square entrance where then you are afforded several pathways to choose from. Another point of interest is the new First Church, known to be the oldest church constructed within the area, dating back to 1896.
