The Cahoon Museum of American Art occupies a restores 1775 Georgian Colonial structure that used to be an overnight stop on the stagecoach line between Hyannis and Sandwich. The structure boasts of wide floorboards, fireplaces, stenciled walls and floors, antique furnishings, and other pieces that complement the galleries and contribute to the homey ambiance of the structure.
The Cahoon Museum of American Art encompasses the early 19th century American art up to the present. It fives meaning to the creative spirit of Ralph and Martha Cahoon by preserving both their art and the house they lived in and had a studio built. The Museum features exhibitions and educational programs for visitors, both young and adult. It promotes the appreciation and study of American Art using the art of Cape Cod and the Northeast as reference. Its permanent collection includes depictions of American schools, Ralph Cahoon and Martha Cahoon as well as maritime paintings, landscape paintings, and 19th century artists. It also features works from contemporary artists and 20th century artists.
