Built in the early 1900s, the National Monument to the Forefathers was formerly called as the Pilgrim Monument. It was in commemoration to the Mayflower Pilgrims, as they signified freedom.

The National Monument to the Forefathers stands 81 feet or 21 meters tall. The original plan was to make it 150 feet in height, but the original plan was tweaked when the designer, Hammatt Billings, died. However, the basics of his original plans were still used, although, a lot of it was changed.
