The Norwottuck Rail Trail is a state park and recreation area in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is a linear path, mostly just a trail, that offers excellent scenery and recreation.
The Norwottuck Rail Trail traces its roots back to 1887 when it was built as a railroad by the Central Massachusetts Railroad Company. It runs for 11 miles and connects Northampton, Hadley, and Amherst. The trail was acquired by the state in 1985, and in 1993, the rail to trail development was started.
Recently, the Norwottuck Rail Trail was reconstructed as there were a few issues found to be very disturbing with its initial development. The use of used glass bottles as a part of the pavement?s aggregate in an attempt to be green has proven more destructive and unhelpful, causing flat tires and other problems. It is planned to be replaced soon.
