With the boom of the then town of Red Jacket, now Calumet, Michigan, due to its copper mines, a community formed. Soon enough, people were looking for a venue of entertainment, so an opera was decided to be erected for the community. This brought in the birth o the Calumet Theatre which was opened on the 20th of March in the year 1900.

Calumet Theatre was basically a live theatre, initially attracting the finest acts in the country. Being one of the first municipal theatres in the United States, it definitely attracted attention and held shows for popular actors like Frank Morgan, John Philip Sousa, Sara Bernhardt, Lon Chaney, and many others.

Sadly, the Calumet Theatre was also greatly affected by the decline of theatre and popularity of movies. It was then transformed to a movie house until the 1950s, and then made into a theatre again in 1958. The place was restored in 1975 for the centennial of the town and then passed to the Calumet Theatre Company in 1983 which uses it today to host theatre-related events.
