Treehuggers, outdoor adventurers and biologists will find haven in the only international wildlife refuge in North America ? the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. Occupying 20.45 square kilometers of islands, wetlands and waterfronts, the refuge is home to several protected species, such as peregrine falcons and lake whitefish. According to the official statistics, the refuge is home to over 30 species of waterfowl, 17 species of raptors, 160 species of songbirds, and 117 species of fish. The Canadian Wildlife Service and United States Fish and Wildlife Sevice jointly manage the wildlife reserve. Established in 2001, the reserve aims to protect the natural flora and fauna within the Great Lakes Area in the Detroit River area.

The wildlife refuge is unique, as it is situated right at the heart of a metropolitan area, making it the city?s ?green lung?.
