The city of Hancock started out like most other settlements in the United States that was born in the 19th century. It was initially a mining village founded by a mining company. When the 20th century approached, the residents wanted something to better establish the local government. This is how the Hancock Town Hall and Fire Hall started out.

Soon enough the two-story, rock-faced red sandstone building was built in one of the main areas of Hancock. The structure sported a Richardsonian Romanesque design, with influences of Dutch and Flemish motifs. It was built for $15,000 and opened in 1899.

Today, the Hancock Town Hall and Fire Hall is still being used as a public building. It is a Michigan State Historic Site and a US Historic District Contributing Property to the Quincy Street Historic District.
