Idlewild is a retirement and vacation community located in Yates Township in Michigan. It is a US Historic District and a Michigan State Historic Site mostly for being one of the few resorts in America that didn?t practice segregation even before discrimination was outlawed in 1964.

Also known as ?Black Eden? from 1912 to the 1960s, Idlewild was actually a popular spot back in the days. It operated year-round and had entertainers from all over the country trooping to the site all the time. During its heyday, it welcomed up to 25,000 visitors during the summer. Sadly, the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act affected the number of Idlewind?s visitors, but it still managed to be a very important vacation spot.
