The New Richmond Swing Bridge was built in 1879 during the time when that part of the Kalamazoo River still sees a good amount of traffic. Back then, the area was still bustling with the New Richmond mine, so there was a need for quicker access around the area.

Connecting the Old Allegan Road and the 57th Street, the New Richmond Swing Bridge is the oldest metal truss bridge in the state. It is also said to be the longest pony truss bridge in Michigan with its four spans measuring up to 429 feet. Aside from that, it is also believed to be the oldest surviving swing bridge located in a highway in the whole country.

The New Richmond Swing Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1997, its main function today is a pedestrian bridge to take visitors of the park that is containing the area.
