Inside the Manistee National Forest is a 3450-acre wilderness area designated as the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness. It is a great hiking venue in Ludington, Michigan and is mostly popular for having a four mile stretch of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline.

The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness is actually very near Ludington State Park. Some southern parts of this site are actually contained in the Big Sable Dunes complex, which is already under the area of responsibility of the said state park. They still maintain independence from each other, though.

When visiting the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, you will need to leave your car on the parking lot by the US Highway 31. From there, you will need to hike into the Nordhouse Dunes as the site is not accessed by roads.
