Originally built to house the Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane in 1885, the Traverse City State Hospital is a huge complex of buildings with a total of 135 acres of land area. It primarily functioned as a mental health institution under different names through the years.

Sadly, most of the Traverse City State Hospital?s buildings have been demolished in the past. However, the Mervini Group has been working on restoring the remaining buildings. The first structure, known as Building 50 has been restored.

Most of the site will be for residential and commercial purposes. Some areas are already occupied as residential apartments, while others are used as commercial establishments like a bakery and winery. They also tend to open a hotel soon.
