Unlike other lighthouses that were approved for construction during the mid 1800s, the Whitefish Point Light actually made it before the Civil War totally broke out in the 1860s. It was first lit in 1861 and instantly used steel framework with an iron skeleton so it can withstand the high winds in the area.

The Whitefish Point Light is located along the area of Lake Superior that is also known as the ?Graveyard of the Great Lakes?. It is where tons of shipwrecks have occurred in the past. These shipwrecks are being preserved by the

Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve today, so future generations of sports divers can still enjoy the site.
Aside from the underwater wonders, the Whitefish Point Light complex is also a public attraction today.
