The mansion was built on 1908 when the Turnblads, a swedish immigrant family, came to America. Swan Turnblad was the publisher and founder of American Swedish Institute which now works as a cultural center for Swedish-American relations. After 21 years of living in the house, the Turnblads gave the mansion and all the furniture in it to the community. Hence, the museum was founded. The Turnblad mansion does not only function as a museum, it also a cultural center.

It is a venue to learn about Nordic culture and Swedish and American culture. Visitors can learn about the role of Swedish culture in Minnesota’s history. The museum holds a variety of events associated with Swedish and Nordic culture. The mansion features carved oaks, walnut and mahogany woodwork and Swedish porcelain tile stoves. It also showcases artworks, fabrics, photographs, diaries and other artifacts. A museum shop is also available where visitors can purchase unique Swedish cultural items. The shop also sells clothes made by Swedish designers and brands. There are also household items, books, accessories and furniture.
