The Fort St. Pierre Site is the location of the old French fort known as Fort St. Pierre, which was built in 1719. This site used to be the main colonial settlement for the French in the area. It was also where the French and local Indians interacted.

After the site was destroyed through an attack made by the Natchez people in 1729, the site was not used again. This is why the Fort St. Pierre Site is now known to be a great archaeological site. The fact that it was only settled for just a decade is helped in dating other sites in the area. It has also contributed largely in the archaeology and tracing of the history during the French colonial period.
