In the business of wildlife preservation and attracting tourists for over 90 years, the Jackson Zoo in Jackson is one of Mississippi’s biggest zoos. Actually, it ranks second after the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo. It holds almost 800 (local or foreign) animals from more than 120 species on a 110 acre historic lot, the Livingston Park. Who would believe that this zoo only started as a small collection of exotic animals kept in the Central Fire Station by some firemen back in 1919?

Every year, the Jackson Park brings 200,000 people locally and from nearby states. Aside from viewing the animals, the zoo is also equipped with a food joint called “The Elephant House Café” and a souvenir shop. Families can have picnics at the Livingston Park and children can enjoy the carousel and a train ride.
