The Melrose mansion located in Natchez, Mississippi is once an 80-acre estate that is said to be a perfected Natchez plantation mansion of its era. It was located in an area filled with magnificent residential structures, so this Greek Revival home simply had to compete well.

The Melrose mansion was built in 1845 for John McMurran, a wealthy and established lawyer and his family. It was later sold to Elizabeth Davis when the Civil War has affected the family’s finances and caused emotional turmoil with the children’s death while in service.

Now operating under the care of the National Park Service as a house museum and as a part of the Natchez National Historical Park, the Melrose mansion, along with its outbuildings can be viewed by the public today.
