Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the early 1970?s, the Merrehope House is not only famous for being one of the most beautiful antebellum mansions today but also for the alleged paranormal activities that take place within its hallowed walls.

If you think the name Merrehope is unique, it?s actually taken from three simple English words, which are Meridian, Restoration and finally, Hope. The house is more than a century and a half old and with humble beginnings, having started out only as a simple 3-room cottage. In 1868, the cottage was sold to John Gary and his daughter Eugenia ? whose spirit is said to still haunt the place ? was responsible for most of the house?s expansions. Its colourful history includes serving as home and office for a Confederate General as well as a home to a boisterous family of fifteen.
