The Oakes African American Cultural Center is a cultural center and an African American heritage museum in Yazoo City, Mississippi. The site tells of the struggles of the black community in Yazoo County in the past, as well as their triumphs and great successes.
Named after the Oakes family, the Oakes African American Cultural Center is housed in the historic Oakes House, purchased by John and Mary Oakes in 1866 as a one room structure which grew in time. Most of the displays on the site are about the Oakes family, being one of the most prominent African American families in the county. The property is also noted for being the home of AJ
Oakes who founded the Oakes Academy in 1884. The institution was a private school for blacks.
