Missouri?s most famous painter, George Caleb Bingham, once spent his time living in a humble brick house in Arrow Rock, Missouri. The celebrated painter moved to the house in Arrow Rock in 1837 after marrying Sarah Elizabeth Hutchison in 1836. The family stayed in the house from 1837 to 1845.

George Caleb Bingham was famous for his realistic style depicting people and their lives in several Missouri ?scene? paintings. It was during his time in Arrow Rock that he started his interest in Missouri frontier and life, a subject that helped developed his style. His most famous painting was ?Fur Traders Descending the Missouri?, an eminent example of the Luminist style that was prevalent during the period.

The house was converted into a small museum and is open for public tours. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965 for its Bingham?s contribution to American art.
