Founded in 1943 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who also funded the project with $30,000, the George Washington Carver National Monument is the first memorial of its sort that was made and dedicated to a non-President and an African American. It primarily preserves George Washington Carver?s boyhood home in Diamond, Missouri.

The George Washington Carver National Monument is a tribute to the beloved agricultural expert, George Washington Carver. The site includes his boyhood home, which was also his birthplace, the 1881 Moses Carver House, the Carver cemetery, Carver Trail, Carver Boyhood Diorama, and the Carver Science Classroom.

The site is listed under the care of the National Park System, but the Carver Birthplace Association helps in managing and maintaining the site.
