Bannack State Park is the site of the Bannack ghost town. The area used to be home to a bustling settlement area, built in 1862 when gold was found on Grasshopper Creek. It was home to miners who stuck around until the 1930s to explore the area more.
Bannack got its name from its original Native American residents, known as the Bannocks. It also served as Montana?s capital in 1864, but only for a short while after gold was also discovered in Virginia City and the capital was moved there.
Declared a National Historic Landmark, the Bannack State Park can be visited by interested tourists. It features up to 60 historical frame and log structures, most of which in well preserved condition.
