The Big Hole National Battlefield serves as a memorial to those people who fought and even died right at this very site on the exact dates of August 9 and 10, 1877. The entire conflict was called the Nez Perce War of 1877. According to historians, it was on August 9, 1877 when the gunshots were heard on the day?s dawn. This happened to the sleeping camp of soldiers of Nez Perce.

As the smoke cleared up by August 10, there were almost 90 Nez Perce who turned out dead along with other volunteers and soldiers that amounted to 31. This battlefield then was made to give honor and tribute to all who risked their lives there. The Big Hole?s visitor center on the other hand is constantly undergoing a lot of rehabilitation.
