Built in 1867, Fort Shaw in Montana was built as a protection to the travelers and settlers from attackers. It was also the venue for the first professional stage performance in Montana, as it is one of the larger posts. One building was 125 feet, and has been a good place for theatrical productions back in the day. When it was abandoned in 1890, it was later transformed to an Indian school.

Today, there is still a good number of original buildings that stand in the area. One of which is used as an occasional museum that is open from time to time during the summer.

The name Fort Shaw was also used to call the small town nearby, which is home to 71 families as of the 2000 census.
