The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness is a wilderness area in Helena, Montana. It covers 28,562 acres of land area that is managed and operated by the Helena National Forest.

Created in 1964 through a Congress act, the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness is rich with history. It has been named in 1805 by Lewis and Clark, with Captain Lewis recording about an area that he called the ?gates of the rocky mountains?. Aside from this, the site is also where the 1949 Mann Gulch fire took place, which killed 13 firefighters and became the subject of the Norman Maclean book, ?Young Men and Fire?.

The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness is open to the public for camping and fishing. However, motorized vehicles and bicycles aren?t allowed inside the site.
