The Granite Mountain Mine Memorial is a memorial dedicated to the Speculator Mine Disaster which took place in 1917. The event was quite a sad affair, taking up to 168 miner lives.

The disaster took place in June 8, 1917, when the assistant foreman Ernest Sullau checked the electrical cable that had fallen to the 2400 foot level mining area. Accidentally, a tiny particle of paraffin paper touched a part of the cable which ignited a fire and spread choking smoke throughout the area.
The Granite Mountain Mine Memorial was built in 1996, with the initiative of the US Environmental Protection Agency. It contains names of the miners who gave their lives and letters to families from the fallen miners.
