The Mai Wah Society Museum was established for the collection, preservation of artifacts, historic buildings and sites. It also presents public exhibits and support public research and publication of scholarly materials that are of general interest. It promotes the public education about the conditions of Asian people in the Rocky Mountain West. Generally, it preserves and interprets the Asian heritage of Butte and it has been doing so since 1991. Aside from exhibits, the Museum also holds and participates in special events and programs.

The Mai Wah Museum houses its own Gift Shop where visitors can choose from a wide variety of souvenirs, Chinese toys, merchandise, and other educational materials. It also offers books, wind chimes, posters, and shirts that commemorate the Chinese Year of the Dog, Rat, Monkey, and many more.
