The site of the last event of the Great Sioux War in 1876-77, the Battle of Wolf Mountain, the Wolf Mountains Battlefield is a National Historic Landmark District as of 2008. It was where Crazy Horse and his band of Oglalas, in coordination with the Lakotas and Cheyennes, were able to rain rifle fire on soldiers. However, this still did not stop the battle from being a point that has affected the surrender of the Lakotas and Cheyennes later on.

Also called as Where Big Crow Walked Back and Forth, the Wolf Mountains Battlefield was able to retain much of its look and feel from the time that the historic event took place in the 1800s. Threats of being developed for coal bed methane production has made preservationists worried about the site. Luckily, no initial actions are being established yet.
