The Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte Memorial Hospital is a small medical facility in Walthill, Nebraska. It is most notable for its history, as much as its service. It boasts of having many firsts, including the following:
1. It was founded and developed by the very first Native American medical doctor in the United States. Dr. Picotte is also one of the first female physicians in the country.
2. It is the first hospital for an Indian reservation that is not funded by the US government.

The Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte Memorial Hospital operated until the 1940s. The building, designed by William Steele and built in 1913, has served a variety of functions since the facility’s closing down. Today, it is being restored by the Center for Rural Affairs.
