The Scotts Bluff National Monument is a notable area for two major reasons. The first one is that it is an important part of the Oregon and Mormon Trails. The second reason is that it features an 830-foot tall bluff.

The Scotts Bluffs National Monument area was also once a very important landmark for fur traders. It was used as a common route to travelers in the early to mid 1800s, mostly using the bluffs as a landmark for navigation.
