The Union Pacific Depot is the first completely air-conditioned railroad passenger station in the world. In terms of design, it makes use of a modernistic and western approach. Architects describe it as one of the most beautifully designed structures in the United States.

Originally constructed as the Union Pacific Railroad Depot, it was designed by reputable architects, John and Donald Parkinson. The design of the depot, making use of solid oak and amounting to $83,600, exemplifies the Mission Revival Design. The structure is actually a replacement for an older structure, which served as a civic center for Caliente and a venue for government offices before it burned in 1921. The new facility now consists of a 5-room hotel and restaurant.
