The Athenaeum Library and Museum located in Portsmouth was made in 1817. It served as a library which could only be accessed by its shareholders. The entire building was made for the Fire and Marine insurance company which was incorporated by 1803. Now, the building is utilized for private use that is exclusive for about 300 members.

The name of the museum was taken from the goddess of wisdom, Athena. The temple of the arts and sciences section was built in honor of her. It remains consistent with its tradition of improving the few remaining libraries across US. This library is home to about 40,000 volumes and its archive is composed of mixed images, manuscripts and a lot more. It is also hosts to many cultural and educational events.
