The Ellis River is 16.7 miles (26.9 km) in length. The river rises on the highest peak in the northeastern United States because the river rises at the slopes of Mount Washington. The Ellis River Trail is a favorite among the White Mountain trails because it is very challenging. The trail goes through evergreens and hardwoods. It is connected to many other bodies of water and rivers like Saco River, Cutler River and Crystal Cascade which is a waterfall in Pinkham Notch. The trail descends on Goodrich Falls near the village of Glen in Barltett town.

The Ellis River is most famous for whitewater rafting and kayaking. It is more difficult than in other states to undergo this kind of sport because not only the Jackson Gold Course section of Ellis River is more than 6 miles long, it is also rated as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The trail has enough mileage which many rafters will surely enjoy for the whole afternoon.

There are also campgrounds near a river where visitors can set up their camps. The Ellis river is usually a wet and rainy place. The rainiest month is every September while May is the driest month where there is less precipitation.
