Believed to be the oldest public monument in New England, the Endicott Rock is actually a huge rock that was marked by John Endecott, who was the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, during their exploration in the site in 1652 (according to the markings incised on the rock). It is now located in a state park in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Now protected from elements that could damage its integrity, the Endicott Rock is housed in a pavilion. Its cracks are stabilized by iron fillings. Aside from John Endecott?s markings, there are also other initials present on the rock. Experts believe that they?re of Simon Willard, Edward Johnson, Jonathan Ince, and John Sherman, who were also present during the incursion.
