The United States has quite a long and colorful military history. As such, there are a lot of memorials and monuments that serve to commemorate the most historic parts of this. And the city of Exeter, New Hampshire is certainly no different, with several markers celebrating its own share in the country?s military glory.
One of the most notable of these is the George Leonard Smith Gun near the corner of Walter Street and Railroad Avenue. The gun was donated by Capt. George Leonard Smith of the US Navy, in commemoration of Exeter?s World War II veterans. The cannon is also notable in that it incorporates the breech mechanism that Capt. Smith himself designed. The gun comes with a marker containing Smith?s message to the veterans.
