Hanna Duston is a Pioneer mom who is also the very first woman to have a monument in the United States. Six days after giving birth in 1697, she was abducted, together with her newborn daughter and her nurse. They were dragged from Haverhill, Massachusetts, which was where they?ve settled together with her husband and eight other kids to New Hampshire.

After a couple of days, one of their Native American captors snatched Duston?s daughter, named Martha, and killed her by banging her to a tree. This, of course, angered the mother, causing her to snatch a tomahawk that led to the massacre of their captors. She also scalped 10 of the 12 Native Americans who kidnapped them, and took those body parts with her when she went home.

The 35 feet Hanna Duston Monument was installed in 1874 on the very spot she avenged the death of baby Martha.
