Built for the wealthy merchant, John Moffatt, in 1763, the Moffatt-Ladd House is one of the finest Georgian mansions in the United States today. It got its name from the two major families that occupied the property.

Originally owned by John Moffatt, it was then passed to his daughter, Karharine Moffatt Whipple, who married William Whipple, one of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire. They lived on the property during the Revolution, and passed the ownership to Maria Tufton Haven Ladd, who was Moffatt?s great granddaughter. It stayed with the family until the year 1900 when Alexander Hamilton Ladd passed away.

The Moffat-Ladd House has been operated as a historic house museum since 1912 and was declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1968.
