Built in 1771 as one of the 11th stations established before the American Revolution, was the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. This lighthouse is located in Forth Constitution in New Castle, New Hampshire. The lighthouse today is visible some 12 nautical miles away. The light can be seen as green due to an acrylic cylinder that covers the lens. As great as the lighthouse that can be seen today, there is a rich history that this lighthouse has seen.
The first lighthouse constructed was a shingled wooden structure. It has then an iron lantern and cooper roofing. The light source was cooper oil lamps. A second tower was made about 100 yards from the original tower. In 1804, the tower a Fourth orders Fresnel lens was added.
A third lighthouse was constructed in 1878 on the same foundation as the 1804 tower. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 2009.
