The original Uncle Sam, also known as Samuel Wilson grew up in this red wooden house on Valley Road, Mason. He owned a meat packing company in New York and became the major supplier of beef for the army. The brand stamped on the meat barrels was “U.S.” but people recognized it as “Uncle Sam”. Soon enough the term “U.S.” evolved to “Uncle Sam”, who then became the popular image of the United States government.
This four-acre estate was built in 1770 and is almost 232 years old as of today. In 1966, it was restored and a marker was set up to commemorate its former resident and his contribution to U.S. history. It is now owned by Jean-Pierre Mouraux after buying it in 2004. Together with his wife Cecile, they turned Uncle Sam’s house into a small private museum. It is open for visitors on appointment basis or during Uncle Sam’s birthday every 13th of September.
