The Absecon Lighthouse, climbing up to 228 steps, is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third in the entire country. Up on the restored lighthouse tower, a spectacular view of New Jersey awaits.
It was built in 1855 to 1857, with a temporary suspension on its construction under Lieutenant George Meade?s direction. It didn?t even receive a paint job until 1871.
After over a century later, the lighthouse was included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Absecon Lighthouse was lit in 1954 to celebrate Atlantic City?s Centennial and in 1963 for the state?s tercentenary. The exact first-order Fresnel lens that was first used to guide the mariners in the earlier times is still the very same lens that is being used today.
