If San Francisco has the Golden Gate and New York takes pride in its Brooklyn Bridge, then New Jersey has its own bridge ? George Washington Bridge.

Spanning the breadth of the Hudson River, this suspension bridge literally bridges the divide between the neighboring states of New Jersey and New York. The bridge connects the Washington Heights neighborhood in Upper Manhattan in New York City, and city of Fort Lee in New Jersey. The bridge has an upper level with four lanes for both direction, and a lower level with three lanes.

The bridge opened in October 24, 1931 after four years of construction. The bridge was designed by chief engineer Othmar H. Ammann, and chief architect Cass Gilbert. The bridge gained a reputation for being the busiest in the world; the bridge reportedly carried a record 106 million vehicles in 2007.
