The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge started way back in 1960. It is filled with a variety of environments like swamp woodland, cattail marsh, and a lot of grasslands. All these can be found in the entire 7,768 acres of the place. It serves as home to a total of about 244 species of birds which can be spotted according to the schedule of their seasonal migrations.

Mammals can also be found in the area from foxes, muskrats, frogs, fish and any more. It is also abundant with a great deal of flora and fauna making it perfect enough to be called as a refuge to the children of Mother Nature. It is not just the plants and animals enthusiasts who would love the place but also the hikers.
