Amidst the Chama Canyon wilderness stands the Christ in the Desert Monastery, a Roman Catholic Benedictine site. It was established in 1964 by Fr. Aelred Wall OSB, a Mount Savior Monastery monk. The building was designed by the critically acclaimed George Nakashima. It has a chapel, well appreciated for its beauty, as well as a guest house among others.

The monks of the Christ in the Desert Monastery follow the Benedictine life. They?re very self-sufficient with solar power, agriculture, crafts, and even computer work. They were once documented in the TV mini-series titled ?The Monastery? aired in the TLC network in the UK and US.

People can visit the Christ in the Desert Monastery and join the monks for the mass and monastic Divine Office.
