The cave shelters in the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument are wonderful proofs of our early ancestors? adaptability and ingenuity. Located in southwestern New Mexico, several cavities along the cliffs of Gila offer scientists and laymen a glimpse of the life and culture of Mogollon people who lived about 700 years ago. The site was declared a National Monument in 1907.

The cliff dwellings are strategically located to provide early dwellers excellent protection and concealment. The dwellings are situated high enough to protect against wild animals, while the surrounding Gila Forest provide food, cover and materials.

The visitor center in the park contains a small museum for the guests, while park volunteers provide guided tours and lectures about the monument. Other nearby attractions include forest trails, hot springs and Gila River fishing.
