The Harwood Museum, created in 1923, serves as an instrument in bringing Taos arts to the world and vice versa. It preserves, displays, and interprets the aspects and works of art that are related to New Mexico.
In the early 20th Century, numerous artists were attracted to the area of Taos because it enabled them to pursue a new and truly American art that is devoid of industrial influence. Art in this area is inspired by the landscape of New Mexico as well as the traditional Native American and Hispanic cultures of the region.
Today, the renovated museum now contains 7 galleries, making it a valuable resource for the region. Its exhibits and growing permanent collection enables it to serve the people of the area including scholars, educators, authors, and students.
