Rio Grande Zoo is the facility of Albuquerque Biological Park which encompasses the 26 hectare land area of the park. It was founded in 1927 and recognized by American Zoo and Aquarium Association. Thus, visitors can expect that the zoo advocates wildlife conservation measures.

The zoo is divided into continents according to the animal?s natural habitat. Some animals featured in the continent of South and Central America are Cuban Amazon, different kinds of tamarin, hyacinth macaw, different kinds of snakes and serpents such as green anaconda, vine snake, and emerald tree boa, red-belly piranha, condor, Caribbean flamingo, jaguar, and howler monkey. Meanwhile, the North America?s continent features animals like American alligator, mountain lion, American bison, Mexican wolf, different kinds of snakes and eagles, bobcat, California sea lion, tiger salamander, owls, and turkeys. The Arctic region features polar bears and arctic foxes. Though the Arctic continent features animals not diverse as the other continents, this is one of the most sought regions in the zoo, and it never fails to leave the visitors in awe.

Meanwhile, the combined regions of Australia and Oceania are home to animals like koala bears, salt water crocodile, Micronesian kingfisher, kangaroos, python, woompo fruit dove, echidna, cockatoos, and budgegree. On the other hand, the continent of Africa gives the visitors an ambiance of wild jungle with some of its animals like giraffe, cheetah, gorillas, chimpanzee, hippopotamus, African wild dog, Madagascar ground boa, zebra, rhinoceros, ostrich, mole rats, and African lion. The biggest continent, Asia, entertains the visitors with animals like red panda, various kinds of pythons, dessert camel, orangutan, komodo dragon, Bengal tiger, and Asian elephant.

The zoo is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the summer season, the zoo hours are often extended until 6:00 PM, while during the ?Zooperwednesdays,? its operation is extended until 8:00 PM.
