The Sandia Peak Tramway is an aerial transport which brings tourists in Albuquerque 4,000 feet from the ground. Located in the eastern edge of Albuquerque, the tram is one of the most popular tourist sites in Central New Mexico.
One of the Sandia Peak and Ski Company owners Robert Nordhaus was inspired by his trip in Europe when he rode a similar ride as the tramway. His business partner Ben Abruzzo helped him to establish the ride which opened in May 16, 1966. The idea of connecting Albuquerque City to the peak of Sandia Mountain has helped the travelers to compensate travel time and the hassle of driving up to the steep and icy roads of the mountain.
The tramway is a bi-cable for a round trip or reversible aerial journey to and from the Sandia Peak. Each car has the capacity of 10 passengers or a weigh of 10,000 pounds. In one hour, the tram cars can travel 200 passengers, making it possible to take an approximate of 10,500 trips in a year.
From the top of the tramcar, the passengers will have the view of the west of 10,378 feet high Sandia Mountain. Come closer from a distance are the giant formation of granite rocks, bushy canopies of the forest as well as terrains and cliffs. The 11,000 square miles panoramic view of the Albuquerque from tramcar never fails to amaze the passengers. From the tramcar, the west region of Rip Grande Valley and its volcano field are spectacular sights together with the Valle Grande, a volcanic crater which is considered as the largest crater of volcano in the world.
