Wheeler Peak, formerly known as Taos Peak is located near the town of Taos, on the Sangre De Cristo mountain range. Even though the first person who climbed the summit is unknown, it was named after Major George Montague Wheeler who led a 10-year geologic expedition and study in New Mexico and surrounding states. At 13,161 feet, it is measured as the highest peak in New Mexico after a survey was done by Harold D. Walker in 1948 that overthrew Truchas Peaks.

Wheeler Peak is a great place for an outdoor adventure whether for a day hike or extreme backpacking. Hikers will encounter quite an abundant population of big horn sheep on the way to the Peak. But, they are not considered people-friendly. Two routes lead to the summit ? the Wheeler Peak Trail, also known as the Bull of the Woods Trail and the Williams Lake Trail. The best time to climb is late May until November.
